The Juror

John Salminen

Juror's Statement

It was an honor and a pleasure to serve as juror and judge for the 2010 ISAP On-Line exhibition.  The selection process was difficult with so many high quality pieces to choose from.  I kept my selection criteria flexible in order to accommodate the truly unique nature of many of the submitted paintings.

While some pieces caught my attention immediately, others revealed their strengths over time as I viewed the images repeatedly.  Too much emphasis on technique can sometimes result in competent but uninteresting paintings, while too much emphasis on content can produce overly sentimental or obvious paintings.  I looked for works with a good balance of both highly developed  technique and content.

In the end, I was pleased with the exhibition, and I hope that the viewers find the images to be as diverse and interesting as I did.  It is always interesting to see what our contemporaries see in the world around them and what they choose to commit to paper and canvas.

My thanks to the organizers and congratulations to everyone who submitted work for this year’s exhibition.
